## Where it appears

Not in an archival document of this research, but in the reconstructions. Chaim Freedman, the Australian genealogist who reconstructed the Komisaruk and Zhmood families of the Ekaterinoslav farming colonies, spells the surname this way, and the collaborative trees built on his work repeat it.

That is why this site's entries for that generation —Koppel, his brothers and his children— carry the surname Zhmood: it is the name under which they are found when searching. The oldest document that names them, the 1858 census, says Zmud, and the 1899 birth record says Zhmud.

## Zmood

According to this research's account, in the early twentieth century several members of the family emigrated to Australia, New Zealand and the United States, and some branches kept earlier forms of the surname. Hence there are people named Zmood in Melbourne. Much of what is known about the older generations was preserved thanks to that branch.

## What this form does not prove

An entry reading “Koppel Zhmood” does not mean a document says so: it is the transliteration used by a reconstruction, not the spelling of a record. And Zhmood, Zmood or Zhmoot in another tree does not prove kinship: the word is the same one borne by many unrelated families.
