# Zhmuydya

**Recorded form.** The form under which family trees published online name the line's oldest ancestors —Leizer, Yehuda and Alexander— and David. No document of this research shows it: the 1858 census writes Zmud.

## First documented appearance

No document of this research shows this form.

Other spellings: Zhmudya, Zhmuyda

## Where it appears

In the family trees published online, which propose three generations above Falk —Alexander, Yehuda and Leizer Zhmuydya— and which also name David this way. That is why the entries for those three generations carry this surname: it is the name under which they are found when searching.

No document of this research shows it. The 1858 census writes “David Falikov Zmud”, and the 1853 list, Zhmuyd.

## What the word says

It is the same word as Zmud and Zhmud: it comes from Žemaitija, Samogitia, the region of western Lithuania that the Slavic languages called Żmudź, and meant roughly “the one from Samogitia”.

## Nearby forms

Zhmudya and Zhmuyda are recorded forms of the same word. This research does not date them in any document of its own: they are listed in the name table because they are useful for searching.

## What this form does not prove

It is not the form of the 1858 census, which says Zmud, nor of any other document of this research: it comes from reconstructions with no papers attached. And like Zmud, it meant “the one from Samogitia”: finding it —or Zhmudya, or Zhmuyda— in a record does not prove it concerns this family, since there are Zhmuydas in Russia and Belarus with no connection to this line. It is useful for searching.
