The half-brother

Julio Manowsky

Son of Malke and her second husband, born after Felix's death. He is Malke's fourth child and the only one who does not bear the Smud surname.

Family memoryc. 1910 – 1970s

After Felix died around 1909, Malke remarried, and Julio was born of that union. That is why he is the only one of Malke’s four children not named Smud: he bears his father’s surname. His father’s given name has not come down to us, and the family remembers the surname as Manowsky or as Majnovsky, with no certainty about which form is right. It is the same problem the Smud surname had for a century, one generation later and on the other side of the Atlantic.

When Malke died, before the end of the First World War, her three older children went to Entre Ríos and Julio’s father remarried.

Around 1936 Julio married Sofía Grossman. They had three children: Carlos, Esther —who lives in Israel— and Leo, now deceased. Julio died in the 1970s; Sofía outlived him and in 1996 was living in Madrid. The text Rubén wrote that year credits them with two daughters, Esther and Leonor; what is listed here is what the family knows today.

He does not appear in the drawn tree because that tree follows the Smud line, and Julio belongs to Malke’s second marriage: placing him would require knowing who his father was.
