The JewishGen trees

What researchers upload to the Family Tree of the Jewish People. Chaim Freedman's file, from 2017, already had the household of Aba that the 1858 census confirms —with his daughter Dofka, of 1838— and gives the generations before Falk with death years. Other trees repeat the version that census contradicts.

The Family Tree of the Jewish People is a database of trees uploaded by their authors. Every entry says who submitted it and when, so it is possible to see which version each researcher holds, and since when.

The most interesting part is in Chaim Freedman’s own file, updated in March 2017: there the Ludza family appears as Zhmuydya, with Aleksander (1778–1834) and his sons Falk (1797–1840) and Aba (1802), and with Aba’s two daughters, Khaska and “Dofka”, born in 1838. That Dofka is the Dvorka the 1858 census records as Koppel’s wife and Aba’s daughter: the same person his February 2020 report, three years later, would call Deverah Yovel. The correction Freedman published in October 2020 brings him back to what his own tree already said.

The death years of those generations —1834 for Aleksander, 1840 for Falk— have the shape of those that come from the Ludza revision lists, held in the National Historical Archive of Belarus. The tree does not say which document each comes from, so here they stand as unverified: they are the most concrete lead there is for what is missing above Falk.

Lior Gradstein's tree and others still give David as the husband of “Chanah Reizel Komisaruk”. The 1858 census calls her a daughter of Zalka.
